Han highlighted the significance of progressively restoring dialogue between the two nations as part of efforts to stabilize ties strained by recent disputes.

Context of the Comments

Han’s remarks followed discussions between Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the Special Representative talks.

The talks, which commenced on Wednesday morning, centered on rebuilding bilateral relations after the October 21 agreement to disengage troops in eastern Ladakh.

Doval’s visit is viewed as a possible step toward normalizing ties between the two nations, strained since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020.

On the eve of the meeting, China expressed readiness to work with India to “restore bilateral relations to a stable and healthy path at the earliest opportunity.”

These discussions marked the first high-level engagement between India and China’s Special Representatives since December 2019. Until now, Doval and Wang’s interactions have primarily focused on multilateral matters rather than addressing the protracted border disputes.
