Unmasking the Agenda: Understanding the Drivers of the Anti-India Campaign in Bangladesh

Introduction

The digital era has ushered in unprecedented connectivity, with social media platforms serving as powerful conduits for shaping public opinion. In recent times, Bangladesh has experienced a notable surge in anti-India sentiments, evidenced by the proliferation of hashtags like #BoycottIndianProducts and #IndiaOut. This phenomenon, though complex, demands a thorough investigation amidst the backdrop of misinformation and political agendas. Understanding the origins, intricacies, and implications of this campaign is essential for fostering informed discourse and constructive engagement.

Origins of the Anti-India Campaign

A detailed analysis of over 4000 tweets reveals a surge in the usage of hashtags like #BoycottIndianProducts, alongside lesser-known hashtags such as #IndiaOut and #BoycottIndia, on social media platforms in Bangladesh. This uptick occurred approximately a week after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assumed office following controversial elections that saw boycotts from opposition parties.

Among these hashtags, #BoycottIndianProducts emerged as the most prominent, amassing over 3,800 posts on X (formerly Twitter). The momentum behind #BoycottIndianProducts intensified when several influential accounts associated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), its media cell, and the magazine 'The Road to Democracy' initiated what seemed to be a coordinated campaign on January 18th. This effort coincided with a statement from the BNP's media cell, asserting an increase in opposition to India in Bangladesh and blaming the Indian government for political woes in the country.

The BNP's media wing referenced the contents of a YouTube video in their tweet, alleging India's interference in Bangladeshi elections for the past 15 years. This video made additional unverified claims, including India's purported neglect of Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, conveniently overlooking India's substantial financial assistance amounting to $4 billion, which received appreciation from Sri Lankan leaders.

While the top leadership of the BNP refrained from officially endorsing the boycott, lower-ranking members and sympathizers consistently promoted the campaign through posts discouraging the purchase of Indian goods and discouraging travel to India for medical treatment. Additionally, they disseminated instructional content, including photos and videos, on identifying Indian products.

Prominent figures leading the boycott campaign include France-based activist Pinaki Bhattacharya, BNP youth wing leader Ershad Nabil Khan, the BNP's student wing for private universities named Voices For Democracy, London-based activist Rupom Razzaque, and an account known as Revolt, previously dedicated to soccer updates but now vocal in supporting the boycott movement.

Challenges of Misinformation

Numerous social media accounts actively promoting the anti-India narrative have been found to frequently share fake news and misleading claims, raising concerns about the dissemination of disinformation targeting India, reminiscent of a similar trend observed in the Maldives last year.

For instance, Rupon Razzaque, known for his daily anti-India posts, recently shared a screenshot on X containing a mix of motivated agenda and incorrect information. The screenshot alleged that India earns USD 1 billion annually by levying charges on international flights passing over Bangladeshi airspace. It further accused the Sheikh Hasina government of failing to install radars required for aircraft tracking due to Indian pressure. However, these claims are unsubstantiated and inaccurate.

Contrary to the assertions made in the screenshot, Dhaka had signed an agreement with a French company in October 2021 for the supply, installation, and maintenance of radars, among other services. Additionally, reports quoting the country's civil aviation chief confirmed that the radars were indeed functional, with efforts underway to automate and interlink them.

The prevalence of such misinformation is concerning, especially in light of the European Union's findings regarding the role of online disinformation in the Maldives election. The EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) highlighted the significant impact of anti-India disinformation campaigns, fueled by fears of Indian influences and anxiety over the presence of Indian military personnel within the country.

Radicalization and Bigotry

A troubling aspect of the anti-India campaign is its descent into religious and cultural bigotry. Certain individuals and groups have resorted to derogatory narratives targeting India, Hindus, and Hinduism, exacerbating existing societal fault lines within Bangladesh. Such rhetoric, fueled by hate and misinformation, not only undermines the longstanding cultural ties between Bangladesh and India but also perpetuates intolerance and sectarianism, posing significant challenges to social cohesion and harmony.

Role of Indian YouTubers

Indian YouTubers are inadvertently fueling the flames of the anti-India narrative with their irresponsible and unverified content. Through clickbait videos, they provide fodder for campaigners pushing the agenda against India. One such video titled 'Role of RAW in Bangladesh elections' garnered significant attention among accounts tweeting #BoycottIndia and #BoycottIndianProducts.

In this video, uploaded on January 12, YouTuber Pavneet Singh, with over 3.1 lakh subscribers, made unsubstantiated claims regarding the involvement of India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Bangladesh's elections. Singh alleged that RAW refrained from engaging with certain political parties and manipulated the narrative to ensure the victory of specific candidates. He further asserted that RAW officials met with leaders of the Jatiya Party to influence their participation in the polls. However, Singh failed to provide any credible sources to substantiate his claims. Unfortunately, Singh is not alone in spreading such content for personal gain. Several other Indian channels have also resorted to sensationalist content to attract views and revenue, further perpetuating the cycle of misinformation and distrust.

It is imperative to approach such content critically and with skepticism, ensuring that misinformation does not dictate public discourse and perception. Responsible engagement with online content requires discernment and fact-checking to distinguish between authentic reporting and sensationalist propaganda.

Parallels with the Maldives and Selective Targeting

Comparisons with the 'India Out' campaign in the Maldives offer insights into shared themes of misinformation and geopolitical maneuvering. However, it is crucial to acknowledge the nuanced distinctions inherent in each context. Unlike the Maldives, where anti-India sentiment was pervasive, Bangladesh's campaign appears to be primarily driven by specific political interests rather than a broad national sentiment, underscoring the multifaceted nature of regional dynamics and the complexities of geopolitical relations.

India's Commitment to Regional Cooperation

Amidst the escalating tide of anti-India sentiment, it is imperative to reaffirm India's unwavering commitment to fostering regional cooperation and mutual respect. India's relationship with Bangladesh has been characterized by shared cultural affinities, economic collaboration, and a commitment to mutual prosperity. India's extensive assistance to Bangladesh, including substantial financial aid and infrastructure development projects, underscores its steadfast dedication to promoting stability and development in the region, transcending political rhetoric and fostering enduring partnerships.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the surge in anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh necessitates a comprehensive examination, unraveling the complexities of misinformation and political agendas. India remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing positive relations with Bangladesh, rooted in mutual respect and cooperation.

As Bangladesh navigates its political landscape, it is imperative to uphold truth, reject misinformation, and prioritize dialogue and cooperation for the collective advancement of both nations and the broader South Asian region, fostering a climate of trust, understanding, and collaboration.
