Towards a Greener Tomorrow: SJVN's Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot

Introduction

In a monumental stride towards sustainable energy solutions, SJVN Limited has unveiled India's premier Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project at the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh. Spearheaded by the visionary leadership of Chairperson and Managing Director Geeta Kapur, this pioneering initiative aligns seamlessly with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, signaling a proactive stance towards green energy adoption in the power sector.

Project Overview and Cutting-Edge Technology

The state-of-the-art Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is a testament to SJVN's commitment to technological excellence and sustainability. Designed to produce a remarkable 14 kilograms of green hydrogen daily during 8 hours of operation, the project stores this clean energy at a pressure of 30 bars across six storage tanks. At the heart of this groundbreaking system lies a 20 Nm3/hour capacity alkaline electrolyzer, a cutting-edge technology that harnesses renewable energy from SJVN's 1.31 MW Solar Power Plant in Wadhal, Shimla, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainability

One of the key pillars of this project is its seamless integration of renewable energy sources. By utilizing the solar power plant's renewable energy, the electrolyzer converts water into hydrogen and oxygen, ensuring a continuous and sustainable supply of green hydrogen. This ingenious approach not only reduces the carbon footprint but also promotes eco-friendly practices, aligning perfectly with SJVN's commitment to environmental stewardship.

Multi-Purpose Functionality and Operational Efficiency

Beyond its primary function of electricity generation, the green hydrogen produced by this pilot project will serve the High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel Coating (HVOF) needs of turbine underwater parts at the NJHPS. This multi-purpose functionality demonstrates SJVN's innovative approach to addressing diverse energy requirements while enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability within the power sector.

National Impact and Alignment with Government Initiatives

SJVN's trailblazing endeavor aligns seamlessly with the Indian government's National Green Hydrogen Mission, accelerating the construction of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector. Geeta Kapur, SJVN's Chairman and Managing Director, emphasized the project's significance in establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source, stating, "This project is a significant step towards establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source for the power sector."

Remote Operations Innovation and Technological Advancement

In a display of technological prowess, Kapur also inaugurated the centralized operation of NJHPS and Rampur Hydro Power Station (RHPS), exhibiting novel remote control capabilities. By remotely operating RHPS Unit 2 from the NJHPS control room in Jhakri, SJVN demonstrated its commitment to effective hydroelectric power management through advanced operational practices and cutting-edge technologies.

SJVN's Diversified Portfolio and Nationwide Presence

Starting with its flagship project, the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh, SJVN has expanded from a singular project in a single state to commissioning eight projects, totaling an impressive 2091.5 MW of installed capacity, along with an 86 km 400 KV Transmission Line. SJVN's current endeavors extend across various states in India, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Odisha, Mizoram, and Madhya Pradesh. Beyond India's borders, SJVN is involved in hydroelectric projects under construction in Nepal and Bhutan, solidifying its position as a leading player in the energy sector on a global scale.

Subsidiaries and Diversified Capabilities

SJVN's diversified portfolio is bolstered by its subsidiaries, including SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt Ltd (SAPDC), SJVN Thermal Private Limited (STPL), and SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL). These subsidiaries enable the company to explore and leverage various renewable energy sources and technologies, further strengthening its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Conclusion

The inauguration of India's first Multi-purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project by SJVN Limited marks a pivotal moment in the nation's journey towards a sustainable and clean energy future. By harnessing the power of renewable energy sources, embracing cutting-edge technologies, and aligning with national initiatives, SJVN has positioned itself as a trailblazer in the green energy revolution.

This groundbreaking initiative not only showcases SJVN's commitment to environmental stewardship and operational excellence but also sets a precedent for other players in the power sector to follow suit. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and energy security, SJVN's pioneering efforts serve as a beacon of hope, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable tomorrow. With its diversified portfolio, nationwide presence, and subsidiaries dedicated to exploring renewable energy sources, SJVN is poised to lead the charge in the clean energy transition. This multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project is just the beginning of a transformative journey, where innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement converge to shape a brighter, more eco-friendly future for generations to come.
