The Prime Minister inaugurates the 2024 ITU World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first-ever telecom standards conference, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency. The event is being held in conjunction with the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024. This marks the first time the International Telecommunication Union-World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (ITU-WTSA) 2024 is taking place in both India and the Asia-Pacific region, hosted at the Bharat Mandapam.

ITU WTSA and India Mobile Congress 2024

Running alongside WTSA 2024, the eighth edition of the India Mobile Congress is underway. With backing from the Department of Telecommunications, the IMC has significantly grown in scale and ambition, aiming to double its global participation from the previous year. Over 120 countries are expected to attend, reinforcing IMC’s status as Asia’s largest tech expo and a key player in global digital transformation.

This year’s theme, "Future is Now," will feature discussions on advanced topics such as quantum technology, the circular economy, 6G innovations, and practical 5G applications. Other areas of focus include cloud and edge computing, IoT, semiconductors, satellite communications (satcom), and electronics manufacturing.

Context

The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) is the governing conference for the International Telecommunication Union's standardisation efforts, organised every four years. This marks the first time that the ITU-WTSA will be held in India and the Asia-Pacific region. The event is significant, bringing together over 3,000 industry leaders, policymakers, and tech experts from more than 190 countries, representing the telecom, digital, and ICT sectors.

WTSA 2024 will serve as a platform for nations to discuss and shape the future standards for next-generation critical technologies, including 6G, AI, IoT, Big Data, and cybersecurity. Hosting this event in India offers the country a unique opportunity to influence the global telecom agenda and guide the direction of future technologies. Indian startups and research institutions are poised to gain valuable insights into developing Intellectual Property Rights and Standard Essential Patents.

The India Mobile Congress will highlight India's innovation ecosystem, featuring leading telecom companies and innovators showcasing advancements in Quantum technology and the Circular Economy, with a focus on 6G, 5G use cases, cloud and edge computing, IoT, semiconductors, cybersecurity, green technology, satellite communications, and electronics manufacturing.

As Asia's largest digital technology forum, the India Mobile Congress has established itself as a prominent platform for presenting innovative solutions, services, and cutting-edge use cases to industry, government, academia, startups, and other key stakeholders in the technology and telecom sectors. The event will feature over 400 exhibitors, approximately 900 startups, and participation from more than 120 countries, showcasing over 900 technology use case scenarios, hosting over 100 sessions, and engaging more than 600 global and Indian speakers.
