DIO was founded by two Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). As the executive arm of DIO, iDEX operates under high-level policy guidance provided by DIO.


The initiative has engaged with over 400 Startups and MSMEs, launching 11 editions of the Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC). Additionally, it recently unveiled the Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX (ADITI) scheme. To date, the procurement of 35 items worth over ₹2,000 crore has been cleared, highlighting the initiative's significant achievements and ongoing engagement in the defence sector.
