The Indian Navy will receive a significant enhancement in its combat capabilities on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to commission three advanced naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

This commissioning of cutting-edge warships marks a major step forward in India’s goal to become a global leader in defense manufacturing and maritime security, according to a statement released on Monday.
Each of the three warships features advanced capabilities and has been designed to fulfill distinct needs of the Indian Navy. Among them, INS Surat is the fourth and final vessel of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, equipped with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor systems, as stated.
Prime Minister Modi has described the commissioning ceremony, set for tomorrow in Mumbai, as a pivotal moment for strengthening India’s naval prowess. “The commissioning of three frontline naval combatants will strengthen our efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment our quest towards self-reliance," he said in an X post.
INS Surat
INS Surat is the fourth and last vessel in the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project.
It stands as one of the largest and most advanced destroyers globally.
With 75% indigenous content, it is outfitted with cutting-edge weapon-sensor systems and advanced network-centric technologies.
INS Nilgiri
INS Nilgiri is the inaugural ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project.
It has been developed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy.
The ship is outfitted with state-of-the-art features to improve survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, showcasing the next generation of indigenous frigates.
INS Vaghsheer
INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and last submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project.
It showcases India's expanding proficiency in submarine manufacturing.
Its construction involved collaboration with France's Naval Group.
