India’s Position on Peace
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's dedication to resolving conflicts peacefully, stating “The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of concern for both of us. India has always believed that problems cannot be solved by war and is ready to make every possible contribution for the restoration of peace.”
Enhancing Security and Defense Cooperation between India and Germany
In addition to their talks on peace, Modi and Scholz emphasized strengthening cooperation between India and Germany, particularly in the areas of defense and security. Modi revealed the signing of an agreement for the exchange of classified information, which signifies a growing trust and mutual support between the two countries.
This agreement, along with a recently finalized Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, is designed to enhance collaborative efforts in combating terrorism and separatist threats.
“The growing cooperation in the defence and security sectors is a symbol of our deep mutual trust,” Modi emphasized how these agreements strengthen their mutual objectives in addressing global security challenges.
Scholz's Perspective
Chancellor Scholz, heading a senior delegation, aims to enhance Germany's engagement with India's extensive market, seeing it as a crucial alternative to the country's reliance on China. Speaking to business leaders at the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024, Scholz emphasized the importance of political solutions grounded in international law to uphold global stability.
“In today’s multipolar world, there are no global policemen or singular entities upholding our common rules,” Scholz remarked. He warned that if Russia's actions in Ukraine were successful, the consequences would extend well beyond Europe, posing a threat to global security and prosperity.
What did PM Modi say about the Ukraine war at the BRICS Summit?
In a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the BRICS Summit on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi expressed India's willingness to take on any role necessary to help resolve the Ukraine conflict.
“I have been in constant touch with you on the subject of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have said earlier, we believe that the problems should be resolved in a peaceful manner. We fully support the early establishment of peace and stability. All our efforts give priority to humanity. India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in the times to come,” the prime minister said in Russia's Kazan.
