OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Praises India's AI Growth: "Amazing to Watch"

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed his amazement at how quickly India is embracing artificial intelligence. In a recent post on the social media platform X, Altman praised India's strides in AI, stating, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity — India is outpacing the world.”

The comments follow a sharp rise in the use of OpenAI's tools in India, especially after the company’s latest 4o image generation feature—capable of transforming user-submitted photos into Studio Ghibli-style animations—went viral. This tool was launched as part of a major ChatGPT update last week.


Sam Altman: India Leading the World in AI Adoption

According to a recent report by Reuters, ChatGPT experienced a surge in usage following the launch of OpenAI's new 4o image generation tool, reaching over 150 million weekly active users, with one million users added since the official debut. Additionally, India has become a key market for OpenAI, with its user base growing rapidly after this release.


A recent Deloitte report highlighted that India is becoming a global frontrunner in the adoption of Agentic AI, with over 80% of Indian companies “actively exploring the development of autonomous agents, indicating a substantial shift towards Agentic AI.” signaling a significant shift toward Agentic AI. Following his visit to India in February, Altman also emphasized the country's rising influence in the global AI arena.


Altman revealed that India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, with user numbers having tripled in the past year. He also reshared Studio Ghibli-style illustrations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—alongside other prominent global figures like Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron—which were originally posted by MyGov’s official X account earlier this week.
