Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a remark directed at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, stated that instead of constructing a ‘Sheeshmahal’ for himself, he chose to build housing for the underprivileged.

While inaugurating several development projects in Delhi today, PM Modi remarked, “The country know that Modi never built a home for himself. But in the past 10 years, I fulfilled the dreams of the poor by constructing houses for more than 4 crore poor people”. He added, “I could also have built a ‘Sheeshmahal’ for myself but my dream was to give parka house to my countrymen”.

The Prime Minister inaugurated development projects totaling Rs. 4,500 crore today, which include Ashoka Vihar EVS flats, Sarojini Nagar government quarters, the World Trade Centre, as well as campuses and colleges of the University of Delhi.

Kejriwal’s Sheeshmahal

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who previously asserted that he and his AAP ministers would never use government bungalows, has reportedly renovated his official residence at an estimated cost of Rs. 45 crore. Residing in an expansive mansion with ultra-luxurious furnishings, including allegations of a gold-plated toilet seat, Kejriwal has faced backlash for allegedly spending taxpayers' money on personal extravagance.

Arvind Kejriwal Responds Strongly to PM Modi's 'Sheesh Mahal' Remark

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "insulting" the people of Delhi and their democratically elected majority government. Kejriwal, a former chief minister, stated that if the Prime Minister's government had delivered effective governance during its ten years in power since 2014, there would be no need for such criticism.

“PM Modi gave a speech of 43 minutes today. For about 39 minutes, he abused the people of Delhi and the elected government. Had Modi government performed in ten years, he would not have needed to abuse the people of Delhi,” Kejriwal stated during a press conference on Friday, just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the election campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Delhi Assembly Election 2025 next month.

During his first public rally in the election-bound Delhi, Modi delivered a fierce criticism of the AAP and its national convenor, Kejriwal. While refraining from mentioning anyone by name, Modi blamed the AAP government for leading the national capital into an "AAPda" (disaster) over the past decade of its governance.

“Someone who has made a house worth ₹2,700 crore for himself, someone who flies in ₹8,400 crore plane and someone who wears a suit worth ₹10 lakh talks about Sheesh Mahal doesn't sound good. I do not want to indulge in personal attacks. I do not do politics of abuse. I have worked enough in the last ten years. I believe in politics of development,” Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal mentioned the tailor-made "Narendra Damodardas Modi" pinstriped suit, which reports claimed was valued at ₹10 lakh. The suit made its way into the Guinness World Records when a man from Surat purchased it at an auction for ₹4.3 crore in February 2016.
