Molesting Maulana and the cries of a 14 year old

Introduction

In a shocking case that has sent shockwaves through the city of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a cleric named Sonu Hafiz has been arrested for the heinous crime of raping a minor girl and subsequently forcing her to take abortion pills. This disturbing incident has brought to light the dark underbelly of sexual abuse and exploitation that often goes unnoticed within our communities and in some religious groups. The details of this case are both heartbreaking and enraging, serving as a stark reminder of the need for greater vigilance and stricter enforcement of laws to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.

The Gruesome Attack

The case unfolded on April 13th, 2024, when the mother of the 14-year-old victim filed a complaint with the Naubasta police station in Kanpur South. In her complaint, she alleged that her neighbor, Sonu Hafiz, had been following her daughter with ill intentions for an extended period. Hafiz, who is known as 'Maulana' among the locals, would lure the girl into his room under various pretexts and proceed to sexually assault her, stripping her of her clothes and raping her. When the victim attempted to voice her concerns or threatened to report his actions, Hafiz resorted to intimidation, warning her that he would kill her and her family if she spoke up.

The mother's complaint revealed a horrifying pattern of abuse that had been ongoing for an undetermined amount of time. Tragically, the victim had endured prolonged suffering in silence, forced into submission by Hafiz's threats. As a result of the repeated rapes, the minor girl became pregnant multiple times. Each time she disclosed her pregnancy to Hafiz, he provided her with contraceptive pills in an attempt to terminate the pregnancies.

The situation took a devastating turn when, at Hafiz's behest, the victim consumed abortion pills while three months pregnant. The pills had a severe adverse effect on her health, causing excessive bleeding and loss of consciousness. Alarmed by her condition, the victim's family rushed her to the hospital, where the shocking truth of her pregnancy was revealed.

Faced with the undeniable evidence, the victim's mother confronted her, and the girl finally mustered the courage to disclose the entire ordeal, naming Sonu Hafiz as her abuser. Despite the accused's attempts to intimidate the family and discourage them from pursuing legal action, the mother remained resolute in her quest for justice, urging the authorities to take stringent action against Hafiz.

Police Action

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered an FIR against Sonu Hafiz, charging him under sections 511 (attempting to commit offenses punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonments), 506 (criminal intimidation), 376 (rape), and 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

On Sunday, April 14th, 2024, the police apprehended Sonu Hafiz as he was attempting to flee the city, thwarting his plans to evade justice.

In a viral video, the victim's mother expressed her anguish, recounting how she had harbored suspicions about Sonu Hafiz for nearly a month. She revealed that the accused would smile at the girl in a manner that made her uncomfortable, and when she confronted him, he would dismiss her concerns, claiming that the victim was like a sister to him. However, while subjecting the girl to repeated rapes, Hafiz had assured her that he would eventually marry her, further exploiting her vulnerability.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Naubasta, Manjay Singh, confirmed the arrest, stating,

"On the basis of the complaint, an FIR has been lodged against cleric Sonu charging him under sections 511, 506, 376, and 313 of the IPC along with the Pocso Act on Saturday. On Sunday, the police arrested him while he was planning to escape to another city."

Conclusion

The harrowing tale of the Kanpur cleric's abuse and exploitation of a minor girl has sent shockwaves through the community and serves as a grim reminder of the need for vigilance and swift action to protect the innocent. While the arrest of Sonu Hafiz is a step in the right direction, it is imperative that the judicial system delivers justice and sets a precedent that such heinous crimes against children will not be tolerated.

This case also highlights the importance of education and awareness campaigns to empower victims and their families to speak up and seek help without fear of retaliation or stigma. Furthermore, it underscores the need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of such abuses, including poverty, lack of access to education, and deeply entrenched societal attitudes that enable the exploitation of the vulnerable. As a society, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the rights and safety of children, ensuring that no child endures the unimaginable trauma and suffering that this young victim has experienced. Only through collective action, unwavering resolve, and a strong legal framework can we hope to create a safer and more just world for all.
