In a significant development, the female labor force participation rate (LFPR) has experienced substantial growth over the past five years.
A report by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) reveals that the rural female LFPR has risen from 24.6% to 41.5% between 2017-2018 and 2022-2023 at the national level.

This represents a remarkable increase of 69% over five years, with states such as Jharkhand, Bihar, and Nagaland seeing impressive growth.
Additionally, the urban female LFPR has grown by 25%, rising from 20.4% to 25.4% during the same period.
Gujarat has experienced a significant increase of 63%, while Tamil Nadu has seen a modest rise in urban female LFPR.
“The general trends show that female LFPR has increased in almost all states, with rural areas seeing larger gains than urban areas,” the report stated.
The report also highlighted a notable increase in the female labor force participation rate (LFPR) among married women, particularly in states such as Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Rajasthan.
It is important to note that the female LFPR serves as a crucial indicator of women's economic empowerment and overall economic inclusivity.
Empowering Women Through Modi Government's Policies
The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister has attributed the significant rise in female labor force participation, particularly in rural areas, to the policies of the current Modi government.
“There have been numerous schemes of the Government, especially targeting rural women over the last ten years. These include Mudra loans, the “Drone Didi” scheme and SHGs mobilised under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana to name a few major initiatives for rural women,” the report stated.
“There are many other initiatives that have been aligned with the vision of women-led development across India,” it further added.
