To elevate the event's scale and significance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled development projects worth ₹5,500 crore. These initiatives aim to enhance facilities for attendees and significantly improve the city’s infrastructure.
“Maha Kumbh is a living identity representing our legacy of the divine festival of our faith, spirituality and culture”, the prime minister stated this while addressing the public in Prayagraj last week.
Designated by UNESCO as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity," the Mahakumbh is being celebrated after a 12-year interval at the confluence of the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna. According to religious lore, the mythical river Saraswati is also believed to merge here, giving the site its name, "Triveni Sangam."
What's Been Launched?
Prime Minister Modi launched a series of rail and road infrastructure projects, including the construction of 10 new Road Over Bridges (ROBs), flyovers, permanent ghats, and riverfront roads. These developments aim to improve connectivity and manage the large number of devotees expected during the Mahakumbh.
As part of the central government’s ‘Swacch and Nirmal Ganga’ initiative, measures have been taken to intercept, divert, and treat sewage before it enters the river. These efforts are designed to prevent untreated water from being discharged into the Ganga.
Additionally, the Prime Minister unveiled key temple corridor projects, such as the Bharadwaj Ashram, Shringverpur Dham, Akshayvat, and Hanuman Mandir corridors. These initiatives are focused on enhancing access for pilgrims and promoting spiritual tourism in the region.
When is Mahakumbh?
The Maha Kumbh Mela is set to be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.
