Kharkwal explained to PTI that the municipal corporation team was taking action against individuals collecting garbage illegally using handcarts. During the operation, a mob of approximately 250 people attacked the team. The mob also stole the chain of a female employee, and when her driver and other workers attempted to help, they were assaulted as well, the mayor said.
She added, “I called the police commissioner but he did not receive my call. I sent him a message him and asked him to send a force. When there was no response, I called the district magistrate, who sent his officers to the spot.” “We have told the police that if action is not taken against the accused by Monday, the municipal corporation will take action itself,” Kharakwal added.
The mayor referred to the attackers as "Rohingya" and stated that a case had been filed against them.
She mentioned that the municipal authorities had previously demolished a hutment where the attackers were allegedly residing illegally.
In the meantime, Amit Verma, the Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) of the city police, confirmed that some of the individuals responsible for the attack on the civic team had been identified and would be arrested shortly.
