Looking Back, Moving Forward: PM Modi commends half-century of India-South Korea relations

Introduction:

The diplomatic ties between India and South Korea, spanning 50 years, have evolved into a rich tapestry of collaboration, marked by mutual respect, shared values, and strategic partnerships. This enduring relationship has transcended historical milestones, weaving together economic synergies, cultural exchanges, and strategic initiatives, shaping the trajectory of bilateral ties.

Historical Foundations:

The foundation of India-South Korea relations in 1973 marked the initiation of a dynamic partnership. Key agreements, such as the 1974 Agreement on Trade Promotion and Economic and Technological Cooperation, established a framework for economic collaboration. Subsequent milestones, including the 1985 Convention on Double Taxation Avoidance and the 1996 Bilateral Investment Promotion/Protection Agreement, paved the way for the significant growth witnessed in trade and economic cooperation.

Economic Dynamics:

At the core of this bilateral relationship lies a vibrant economic collaboration. The trajectory of trade between India and South Korea, surging from $530 million in 1992-1993 to a substantial $17.6 billion in 2013, highlights the depth of their economic engagement. South Korea, as the fifth-largest source of investment in India, has played a pivotal role, with industry leaders like LG, Samsung, and Hyundai establishing manufacturing and service facilities on Indian soil. The acquisition of Daewoo Commercial Vehicles by Tata Motors exemplifies India's reciprocal interest, particularly in subcontracting.

People-to-People Bonds:

The Indian community in Korea, numbering approximately 8,000, serves as a vibrant bridge between the two nations. Comprising business professionals, IT experts, scientists, research fellows, students, and workers, this diverse community contributes to the cultural fabric of Korea, fostering greater understanding and collaboration.

Modern Dimensions:

The late 1990s witnessed a transformative phase in India-South Korea relations. Against the backdrop of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, South Korean businesses sought global market access, catalyzing trade investments with India. The establishment of the India-Republic of Korea Joint Commission in 1996 provided an institutional framework for cooperation, with six meetings held to date.

Former Korean President Roh Tae-woo's foresight on the collaboration between India's software and Korea's IT industries laid the groundwork for revising visa policies, expanding trade, and contemplating a free trade agreement. The pivotal state visit of Indian President Abdul Kalam in 2006 marked the beginning of a new phase, leading to the establishment of a Joint Task Force for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2009.

Strategic Partnership and Milestones:

The landmark visit of Korean President Lee during India's Republic Day celebrations in 2010 elevated bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership. Subsequent milestones, such as the signing of the Civil Nuclear Energy Cooperation Agreement during President Pratibha Patil's visit in 2011 and the inauguration of Samsung Electronics's smartphone assembly factory in Noida in 2018, underscored the growing depth of collaboration.

Celebrating a 50 year old partnership:

Celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the enduring relationship between India and South Korea, marking it as a journey defined by mutual respect, shared values, and flourishing partnerships.

The PM conveyed his keen anticipation for a close collaboration with President Yoon Suk Yeol, aiming to further fortify and expand the special strategic partnership between India and South Korea.

Conclusion:

The India-South Korea relationship, characterized by shared values, mutual respect, and dynamic partnerships, has transcended five decades, entering a new era of comprehensive collaboration. From early agreements to recent high-level exchanges and economic ventures, these two nations continue to build on their shared history.

As they look towards the future, the celebration of their diplomatic milestone serves not only as a reflection of their enduring ties but also as a promising indicator of the untapped potential for even greater cooperation in the years to come, shaping the destiny of India-South Korea relations.
