In the 2018 Chandan Gupta murder case, which involved the killing of a Hindu youth during violent mob clashes over a Tiranga Yatra in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, the NIA court in Lucknow on Thursday, January 2nd, convicted 28 individuals and acquitted two. The court is scheduled to announce the sentences for the convicted on Friday, January 3rd.

According to the prosecution’s special advocate, Chandan Gupta, also known as Abhishek Gupta, was fatally shot during a confrontation that arose during the Tiranga Yatra on Republic Day, January 26, 2018. His father, Sushil Gupta, filed a report at the Kasganj police station detailing the incident.

Chandan had participated in the Tiranga Yatra along with his brother Vivek Gupta and others. Allegedly, when the procession reached the gate of Government Girls Inter College via Tehsil Road, a group including Salim, Wasim, Naseem (sons of Barkatullah), Zahid alias Jagga, Asif Qureshi alias Hitler, Aslam Qureshi, Asim Qureshi, Nasiruddin, Akram, Tauq, Khillan, Shabab Rahat, Mohammad Nawab Mohsin, Asif Gym Wala, Saqib, Bablu, Nishu, Wasif, and others intercepted them. Armed and lying in ambush, they reportedly blocked the way, snatched the national flag, threw it to the ground, and shouted slogans like "Pakistan Zindabad" and "Hindustan Murdabad," threatening violence if the procession proceeded without endorsing their slogans.

The court was informed that when Chandan and others resisted, the accused began pelting stones and firing. Salim allegedly targeted Chandan, shooting him fatally, while others also sustained injuries. Vivek Gupta managed to escape and rushed to the Kasganj police station before taking Chandan to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The investigation initially led by local police was transferred to the NIA due to the seriousness and anti-national nature of the incident.

The NIA filed its first chargesheet on April 26, 2018, naming several individuals, including Salim, Wasim, Naseem, and others. A supplementary chargesheet later added more accused, including Asif Qureshi alias Hitler and others. One accused, Azizuddin, passed away during the trial, leaving 30 defendants.

Previously, OpIndia reported that 28 of the 29 individuals accused in the Kasganj violence and Chandan Gupta’s murder, except for Salim, had been released on bail. However, the NIA court has now convicted 28 individuals, acquitted one, and is set to deliver sentences on January 3rd.
