India’s First Hydrogen Train: December Trials, Speed, Route, and Features

India is poised to launch its first-ever hydrogen-powered train in December 2024, marking a significant leap toward eco-friendly transportation. Running entirely without diesel or electricity, this cutting-edge train is a major achievement for Indian Railways, supporting its mission to achieve “net zero carbon emissions” by 2030. Here's a closer look at the route, speed, and unique features of this innovative train.

This groundbreaking train will be the first in India to harness water as its primary power source. Instead of conventional diesel or electric engines, it relies on hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity for propulsion. By combining hydrogen with oxygen, the fuel cells produce electricity, with only steam and water as byproducts, ensuring zero harmful emissions. This clean energy model is expected to pave the way for a new generation of sustainable trains in the country.


Why Hydrogen?

The hydrogen train is a key component of Indian Railways’ bold initiative to reduce its carbon footprint and eliminate air pollution from diesel engines. By utilizing hydrogen fuel cells, these trains avoid emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, positioning them as one of the most sustainable transportation options available.


Beyond their environmental benefits, hydrogen-powered trains generate 60% less noise compared to diesel engines. With a plan to introduce 35 hydrogen trains across the country, Indian Railways is paving the way for a cleaner and quieter future.


Route and Velocity Information

The hydrogen train is set to undergo a trial run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, spanning 90 kilometers. Other potential routes being considered include heritage mountain railways such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and Kalka-Shimla Railway, along with various scenic and remote regions across India.


With a top speed of 140 km/h, the train promises a fast, eco-friendly, and comfortable travel experience. Each hydrogen fuel tank will enable the train to cover up to 1,000 kilometers before needing a refill, making it well-suited for longer journeys in the future.


The Science of Hydrogen-Powered Trains

In this train, hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen gas with oxygen in a chemical reaction. This electricity drives the train's motors, and the only byproducts of the process are water and steam. To sustain the required chemical reactions, the train will need about 40,000 liters of water per hour. Specialized water storage facilities will be built to support the operation of these trains.


Capital and Development

Each hydrogen train is estimated to cost around ₹80 crore to develop. Significant infrastructure upgrades, including hydrogen storage facilities and specialized refueling stations, are being implemented to support the train's operation. Following successful initial tests and approvals of hydrogen fuel cells and plants, Indian Railways is confident that these advancements will help achieve its 2030 net-zero target.


Strategies for National Growth

After successful trial runs, Indian Railways intends to extend its hydrogen train services to other regions of the country. By 2025, 35 hydrogen-powered trains are expected to operate on various routes. These trains will match the speed and passenger capacity of conventional diesel trains, offering an eco-friendly alternative without compromising on efficiency.
