India and its larger role on the Global Stage

Introduction:

In a historic gathering in Delhi, ambassadors from various Arab nations convened to express solidarity with Palestine, emphasizing India's potential role in promoting peace in the Middle East. Timed just ahead of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the meeting showcased a unified regional support for the Palestinian cause.

Led by Saudi Arabia's Ambassador Saleh Eid H Al-Husseini, the event featured representatives from Tunisia, Syria, Bahrain, Lebanon, Morocco, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan, Oman, Libya, Egypt, Kuwait, Algeria, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Djibouti.

Saudi Arabia's Call for India's Leadership:

Ambassador Saleh Eid H Al-Husseini highlighted India's pivotal role in the global political landscape, particularly during its G20 presidency. Referring to the outcomes of the recent Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh, he conveyed the Arab League's expectation of India playing a major role in supporting global peace and stability. The summit, calling for a ceasefire and an end to weapon exports to Israel, sought to address the prolonged siege of the Gaza Strip.

Ambassador Al-Husseini stressed the urgency of a permanent ceasefire, citing the recent Arab-Islamic summit's resolutions. A joint statement after the summit directed key Foreign Ministers to initiate "international action" to halt the war on Gaza and pursue political negotiations for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Palestinian Ambassador's Plea:

Ambassador Adnan Abu Al-Haija highlighted the dire situation of Palestinians, especially in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, attributing the recent conflict escalation to aggressive Israeli actions. He revealed staggering statistics, noting the loss of thousands of lives, injuries, and the tragic situation of missing individuals presumed buried under the rubble of bombed buildings.

The ambassador confirmed that the Arab delegation, having recently visited Spain, plans to travel to New Delhi to continue their diplomatic efforts.

Egypt and Djibouti's Support for Palestinian Statehood:

Ambassadors from Egypt and Djibouti echoed their support for a sovereign Palestinian state and emphasized their countries' efforts in providing aid to Gaza. Egyptian Ambassador Wael Mohamed Awad Hamed criticized Israel's interference in humanitarian aid reaching Gaza, rejecting the idea of allowing Palestinian refugees into Egypt. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire, drawing attention to the obstacles created by Israel at the border crossings.

Djibouti's envoy, Isse Abdillahi Assoweh, stressed the importance of a two-state solution and cessation of violence, underlining the collective call from Arab envoys for India to leverage its international standing in resolving the ongoing conflict.

Significance and Conclusion:

The gathering of Arab envoys in Delhi holds immense significance, representing a unified stance on the Palestinian issue and a collective appeal for India to utilize its international influence to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East/West Asia.

The timing of the meeting, just before the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, serves as a reminder of the international consequences of the Israel-Palestine conflict. As India navigates its role in the new world order, the diplomatic event underscores the expectations and hopes of Arab nations for India to play a significant role in shaping the global geopolitical landscape in favor of peace and stability.
