IIT Kanpur has introduced an advanced technology called the Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System (Anālakṣhya MSCS), which is poised to significantly enhance India’s defense and national security.
This cutting-edge technology is designed to render military vehicles, aircraft, and other assets nearly invisible to radar systems, which are commonly used for long-distance detection, especially from the air.

By absorbing radar waves, the Anālakṣhya MSCS effectively hides objects from enemy radar, making it an essential tool in modern warfare.
The system utilizes special materials known as “metamaterials,” which can absorb a wide range of radar waves, including those used by Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). SAR is a high-resolution radar often used in military and surveillance operations to detect objects from the air. The Anālakṣhya MSCS greatly reduces the likelihood of military assets being detected by SAR, offering vital protection against radar-guided systems. It also enhances stealth capabilities against guided missiles that rely on radar signals to track and target their targets.
The technology was developed by a team of researchers at IIT Kanpur, led by Prof. Anantha Ramakrishna, Kumar Vaibhav Srivastava, and J Ramkumar, along with their students. The team spent from 2019 until now perfecting the system through extensive laboratory and field testing. Notably, over 90% of the materials used in the project were sourced from India, marking a significant move toward self-reliance in defense technology.
IIT Kanpur’s director, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, praised the research team’s efforts and highlighted how the technology will strengthen India’s defense capabilities.
The Anālakṣhya MSCS has now been licensed to Meta Tattva Systems, which will handle its production and deployment for the Indian armed forces.
Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command, referred to the technology as a breakthrough in countering modern surveillance systems. Lt. General Cherish Mathson (retd) commended the development for supporting India’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in defense technology and enhancing national security.
