In a recent and explosive turn of events, the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has recommended the expulsion of Mahua Moitra, a prominent Trinamool Congress MP, from the Lok Sabha. The committee's report, adopted with a narrow 6:4 vote, alleges that Moitra accepted cash and gifts as bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for posing questions in the Lok Sabha.

However, Moitra vehemently denies these accusations, labeling them as part of a larger political conspiracy orchestrated by the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Allegations and Counterclaims

The report accuses Moitra of unethical conduct, claiming she received financial incentives from Hiranandani to ask specific questions in Parliament. Moitra, known for her vocal criticism of both PM Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani, refutes these claims, asserting that the allegations are politically motivated to silence her dissent. In addition to the bribery allegations, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused Moitra of breaching national security policies by sharing her MP login details with Hiranandani which she accepted she did.

Surprisingly, Hiranandani, a businessman with close ties to Moitra, has submitted a sworn affidavit claiming that Moitra made frequent demands for various favors, including expensive luxury items, financial support for renovation of her official bungalow, travel expenses, and holidays. Moitra challenges these assertions, alleging that Hiranandani was coerced into signing the affidavit and insists on the opportunity to cross-examine him.

Committee's Decision and Moitra's Response

The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has rightly rejected Moitra's plea to summon Hiranandani and Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai.

Dehadrai is the complainant on the matter and is an ex-partner of Moitra and the two are currently locked in a bitter custody battle centered around their shared pet.

While the committee's report remains undisclosed, it is said to condemn Moitra for unethical conduct and contempt of the House. The committee recommends a thorough, time-bound legal and institutional inquiry to determine the existence of any potential money trail.

Moitra's response to the committee's decision has been more or less the same. She alleges that the committee is attempting to humiliate her publicly and suppress her dissent, painting the situation as a political vendetta orchestrated by the Adani Group and PM Modi. It is important to note that Hiranandani is a corporate rival of Adani and any harm that occurs to Adani group is an automatic win for him.

Moitra still insists that the allegations, if exposed, could potentially bring down the government in any other democratic country.

Trinamool Congress’s Stance

The Trinamool Congress has appointed her as a district president in West Bengal, sending a clear message of support. While initially adopting a wait-and-watch approach, the party has affirmed its commitment to Moitra, suggesting that it will await the outcome of further investigations before taking any decisive action.

Conclusion

As the controversy surrounding Mahua Moitra's potential expulsion from the Lok Sabha continues to unfold, the political landscape remains charged with allegations, counterclaims, and conspiracy theories.
