Continuing our series on the factors that will play a key role in the upcoming UP assembly elections, we are back with our third part. In this part, we will talk about a very vital factor after caste and polarisation - improved law & order. Ever since Yogi Adityanath became the CM of Uttar Pradesh in 2017, law & order in the most populous state of the country has improved considerably. Yogi has been lucid in sending out the message to criminals and history sheeters - either surrender or be ready to face a law and order. Due to this strict message, crime rate in the state has drastically reduced in comparison to 2016 figures.
According to an August 2020 report, Incidence of major crimes reported in Uttar Pradesh fell to a seven-year low. As per the data released by the state government, the number of people booked under the strict National Security Act (NSA) was the highest in four years. According to the state police, the drop in major crimes was due to the revolutionary changes introduced by the Yogi Adityanath government such as transparency in postings and stable tenure of officials.
When it comes to serious crimes, incidence of murder and rape dropped down 7.8% and 28% respectively year-on-year to 2032 and 1216. When we compare the date of 2016, the last year of the previous Samajwadi Party government, we get to see that cases fell 26% and 38.7% respectively under the two heads.
Talking about other crimes such as dacoity, loot and kidnapping for ransom, the fall in crime rate has been more impressive, down 44%, 43% and 35% consecutively year-on-year to 38, 792 and 15. The crime rates compared to the 2016 figures came down 74.5%, 65% and 55% respectively. On the other hand, since 2013, incidence of crimes reported under the heads came down 69%, 56% and 69% respectively.
In 2020, the state government booked 112 people under the NSA. This was a rise of 13% since 2019 and a rise of 37% since 2016. According to additional director general of police (law and order), UP, Prashant Kumar, there is transparency in posting of officers which he said takes place on merit. Apart from this, there is no political interference in the working of the police. It has been one of the biggest reasons behind the incessant fall in crime rate over the years. He added that the state government offers officers a stable tenure together with a free hand. This has aided in controlling law & order situations in a more effective manner.
It is quite natural to assume that any sane citizen would prefer a government that ensures its citizen’s safety. On this front, locals are more likely to prefer the Yogi Adityanath led government.
