Factors deciding the fate of UP Assembly Elections 2022: Part five

Continuing our efforts to unravel the factors that will play a major role in deciding the fate of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2022, we present to you the next part of the series which is all about the praiseworthy pandemic management by the state administration. For a state as enormous as UP it could have been nothing less than a nightmare to contain the second wave of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even the states one-tenth of UP (in terms of population) struggled for a couple of months before. For instance, in the national capital, the situation had gone completely out of control. There were no beds left by April end.

One can just imagine the plight of a mammoth state like UP had there been no effective management of the pandemic. The administration of UP CM Yogi Adityanath was applauded not only in India but globally. The World Health Organisation (WHO) appreciated the Yogi Adityanath model for the management of Covid-19. After that, NITI Aayog also praised the model. During the never seen before COVID-19 mayhem, the UP government was appreciated for its system of oxygen supply monitoring and real-time COVID management for offering immediate oxygen to every person in need in Uttar Pradesh. Later on, the model was implemented by the Centre and various states.

On account of this COVID-19 management system, the Uttar Pradesh government was able to successfully ramp up 250 MT (metric tonne) of oxygen supply in a very short time to 1,000 MT. In April, this was the highest oxygen supply increase by any state across the country. The WHO had also appreciated the Yogi government for futuristic COVID-19 management in remote areas. It praised the government twice. Prior to this, WHO had cited UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's contact tracing formula during the first wave of the pandemic as an example that should be emulated by other states and praised his Triple T (Trace, Test and Treat) strategy to control COVID-19 during the second wave of the pandemic.

Despite Yogi himself being infected with COVID-19 in April while reviewing the ground preparations to fight the virus in the state, he actively monitored the COVID situation in the state through virtual mode every day. Owing to the accelerated pace of the infection during the second wave, Yogi Adityanath formed 'Team 9' instead of 'Team 11' and decentralized rights and accountability over COVID-19. Due to these reasons, COVID was said to be largely under control in the state.

Today when states such as Maharashtra and Kerala are struggling to contain the pandemic, UP has set an example on how to control the pandemic. In Maharashtra and Kerala, we continue to witness thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths daily, while UP has been seeing less than 200 cases for the last one month and merely few deaths. This is more than enough to prove the excellent administration skills of Yogi Adityanath and a solid reason that is likely to play a crucial role in his victory.
