In a historic move aimed at bolstering India's semiconductor industry, the Union Cabinet, under the stewardship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the construction of three semiconductor manufacturing plants, with a staggering combined investment of nearly Rs 1.26 lakh crore. This pivotal decision, strategically devised to mitigate reliance on global supply chains and position India as a formidable player in the semiconductor domain, represents a significant milestone in the nation's technological journey.


Comprehensive Overview of Approved Manufacturing Plants


  1. Semiconductor Fab with 50,000 wfsm Capacity (Dholera, Gujarat): Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL), in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), will spearhead the establishment of this cutting-edge semiconductor fab. With an investment of Rs. 91,000 crore, this fab will specialize in high-performance compute chips with 28 nm technology and power management chips, catering to diverse applications such as electric vehicles, telecom, defense, automotive, and consumer electronics.

  2. Semiconductor ATMP Unit in Assam (Morigaon, Assam): Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) will lead the establishment of this pivotal unit with an investment of Rs. 27,000 crore. This unit will be dedicated to pioneering indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies, serving critical sectors including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.

  3. Semiconductor ATMP Unit for Specialized Chips (Sanand, Gujarat): CG Power, in collaboration with Renesas Electronics Corporation (Japan) and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand), will orchestrate the establishment of this specialized unit with an investment of Rs. 7,600 crore. Positioned to manufacture chips tailored for consumer, industrial, automotive, and power applications, this unit reinforces India's prowess in microcontrollers, analog, power, and System on Chip (SoC) products.

The approval of these manufacturing plants heralds a monumental leap towards fortifying India's semiconductor ecosystem. N Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons underscored the critical role of semiconductors in an AI-driven digital era, projecting the global semiconductor industry to burgeon to $1 trillion by 2030. He contends that India's foray into semiconductor manufacturing will substantially mitigate global supply chain risks and elevate India's stature as a pivotal player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

The direct creation of 20,000 advanced technology jobs, along with an additional 60,000 indirect jobs, will catalyze employment generation across downstream automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, and other semiconductor-consuming industries, thereby augmenting socio-economic development and fostering inclusive growth.
