AI in Defense: How the Indian Army Utilizes Artificial Intelligence for Security, Cyber Warfare, and More

The Indian Army is undergoing a significant technological transformation, rapidly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance security along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. AI-driven surveillance, cyber defense, and predictive analytics are playing an increasingly crucial role in shaping India’s military strategy, enabling swifter and more efficient decision-making in high-risk scenarios.

From AI-powered drones and automated battlefield monitoring to advanced cyber warfare tools, the adoption of AI marks a paradigm shift in military operations. These advancements align with the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) broader modernization strategy, which has designated 2025 as the 'Year of Reforms,' emphasizing technological upgrades and enhanced interoperability across the armed forces.


AI-Powered Surveillance: Enhancing Border Security

The Indian Army has implemented AI-powered reconnaissance drones and sensor fusion technologies along the LoC and LAC to improve threat detection, monitor movements, and strengthen early warning systems in difficult terrains. A high-ranking Army official, who requested anonymity, stated: "AI helps us process vast amounts of surveillance data in real-time, allowing commanders to react swiftly to emerging threats."


During the October 2024 Exercise Swavlamban Shakti, India demonstrated advanced AI-driven warfare systems, including swarm drones, kamikaze drones, and robotic mules, showcasing their effectiveness in real-time combat scenarios. Additionally, the Army is implementing Project Sanjay, a network of AI-enabled surveillance centers designed to process battlefield intelligence, improving coordination and response efficiency. Machine-learning (ML) algorithms are enhancing object detection along the LoC and LAC, where thermal imaging and anomaly detection tools help identify enemy fortifications, infiltration attempts, and strategic troop movements.


Cyber Warfare: AI as a Digital Defense

As adversarial states intensify their focus on military networks, AI has become a crucial component of India's cybersecurity strategy. Reports indicate that the Situational Awareness Module for the Army (SAMA) is now integrated with the Artillery Combat Command & Control System (ACCCS) and other essential military platforms. Leveraging AI, SAMA enhances cyber threat detection and mitigation, tracks AI-driven disinformation, counters deepfake propaganda, and analyzes intercepted communications in real time to prevent security breaches.


A cybersecurity specialist associated with India's defense and security establishment highlighted: "Cyber warfare is no longer a secondary front—it is a primary battlefield. AI enhances our real-time ability to detect, analyse, and neutralise threats." As adversaries leverage AI to distort social media narratives, the Army has implemented counter-disinformation algorithms to detect and mitigate misleading content before it gains traction.


Teething Problems & Remedies

Despite significant progress, incorporating AI into military operations comes with challenges. AI models rely heavily on accurate data, and errors in training datasets can result in misidentifications. Additionally, adversaries may attempt to manipulate AI algorithms, highlighting the need for strong cybersecurity measures. A secure AI infrastructure is essential to prevent system failures and unauthorized access. To mitigate these risks, India is developing offline AI solutions that function without internet connectivity, enhancing operational security in contested areas while reducing cyber vulnerabilities.


AI in Radar, Weaponry, and Land & Naval Systems

At Aero India 2025, private defense companies highlighted AI innovations in radar optimization, autonomous weaponry, and naval warfare solutions, underscoring the increasing integration of AI into India's defense sector. "The battlefield of the future will be driven by information and automation as much as firepower," a senior Army official remarked.


The Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE) in Mhow has been recognized as the Army's AI Center of Excellence, leading research in AI-driven threat detection, cyber defense against AI-based attacks, and AI's application in autonomous combat decision-making. Although India has not yet approved fully autonomous weapon systems, military officials emphasize that "human-in-the-loop" AI systems—where AI assists but does not replace human judgment—will continue to be the norm.


The Evolution of AI in Indian Military Operations

Acknowledging AI's long-term impact on modern warfare, the Indian Army unveiled a 20-25 year roadmap aimed at enhancing military capabilities. This plan includes establishing joint AI command centers to integrate intelligence across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, deploying Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) for border security and logistics, and utilizing predictive AI models to analyze real-time and historical data for anticipating enemy strategies.


As AI revolutionizes industries worldwide, military operations are also evolving. India is actively embracing technological advancements, ensuring that digital superiority becomes as crucial as conventional firepower in national defense.
